EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals process distressing memories and experiences in a safe and structured manner. Here’s a clear and compassionate explanation of EMDR therapy:
EMDR therapy recognizes that when we experience traumatic or distressing events, the memories and associated emotions can get "stuck" in our brains without being properly processed. This can lead to ongoing emotional distress, negative beliefs about oneself, and even physical sensations related to the trauma.
The process is not just about talking through the trauma, but also about allowing the brain to heal itself by integrating the distressing memories in a more adaptive way. Through repeated sets of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation, people often find that the intensity of their emotions related to the painful memory decreases, and they can develop more positive beliefs about themselves.
